Serco awarded £45m council waste contract extensions

Services company Serco has been awarded three new contract extensions and one new contract to continue to provide a range of waste services for local authorities, worth an estimated total value of over £45 million.

Serco’s Environmental Services business, which provides refuse and recycling collection, was awarded the extensions by three separate local authority clients: Woking Borough Council, Charnwood Borough Council, and Canterbury City Council. Under these contract extensions, Serco will provide services including waste and recycling collections, street cleaning and landscape maintenance services.

Woking Borough Council has awarded Serco a five-year contract extension to provide street cleaning and landscapes maintenance services throughout the borough. The extension, to October 2022, is valued at £15 million, and will extend Serco’s working partnership with the council to 20 years.

Charnwood Borough Council has extended its contract with Serco by three years to provide waste, recycling and street cleaning services valued at £15 million in total. This increases Serco’s existing relationship with the council to 10 years, with further extensions of up to four years possible under the contract.

Canterbury City Council has awarded Serco an extension to its landscapes services contract by a further five years to January 2023, valued at £12 million. Serco has been Canterbury City Council’s services provider since 1996.

New contract with Milton Keynes

Additionally, the company has been awarded a new six-year contract with Milton Keynes Council to manage the care and maintenance of local play areas and play equipment, worth £4 million in total. This new contract supplements Serco’s existing long-term contract with Milton Keynes Council for waste and recycling collections, street cleaning and landscapes maintenance services.

Commenting on the new deals, Robin Davies, Serco’s Director for Environmental Services, said: “These important new contract extensions and awards are testament to all the hard work undertaken by our local teams who are both committed and work tirelessly to provide first-class environmental services to our local authority clients.”
