Calls for all lamp producers to offer free recycling

A survey has found that 91.5 per cent of the lighting industry thinks that all lamp producers should be required to offer free recycling of their products.

The survey was commissioned by Recolight, a compliance scheme specialising in the recycling of lighting equipment, in partnership with Voltimum, an internet portal for the electrical industry.

Involving 780 participants, the survey found that, despite lamp recycling increasing from 23 per cent in 2008 to 52.8 per cent in 2013, 90.4 per cent thought that this could be boosted if government set higher recycling targets for business and household lighting through the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations (which are currently being updated).

Speaking about the survey results, Recolight CEO Nigel Harvey, said: “The message is clear: business users want all lamp producers to offer free lamp recycling. As this is a possible outcome of the consultation, business users might just get what they have asked for.

“It is right that producers take responsibility for their market share of recycling. This change will help promote recycling throughout the industry.”

Novelis expands Brazilian recycling facility

Novelis's new recycling line

Aluminium rolling and recycling company Novelis has announced it has invested $106 million (£63m) in its Pindamonhangaba complex in Brazil.

The money has been used to commission a new coating line for beverage can end stock and expand the facility’s recycling centre. It has added 100,000 tonnes of coating capacity and 190,000 tonnes of recycling capacity to the plant.

This will bring the plant's recycling centre, already the largest in South America, to almost double its capacity (from 200,000 to 390,000 metric tonnes a year) when fully commissioned later this year.

Over 100 new jobs were created to support the expanded operations.

"These critical expansion projects increase our capacity to meet the growing demand for beverage cans in Brazil and enable Novelis to process even higher levels of recycled material as we continue to increase the recycled content in our products", said Tadeu Nardocci, Senior Vice President, Novelis and President of Novelis South America.

"As we look ahead, we expect the anticipated increase in the population's disposable income and the upcoming Olympic Games to drive additional demand in the region."

David Buckley joins Envac UK

Former Sales Manager for container manufacturer Taylor, David Buckley (pictured right), has become General Sales Manager for the underground vacuum waste management supplier, Envac UK.

Envac designs, installs and operates stationary vacuum systems for waste and recyclables.

Starting his new role earlier this week, Buckley said: “Envac is one of the few systems on the market that provides a long-term solution and I look forward to taking this message far and wide throughout the UK. The system’s capability and potential for transforming the nature of waste collection speaks for itself. This combined with a comprehensive list of contacts I’ve developed over my career leaves me in no doubt that Envac UK is about to enter its next phase of significant growth.”

Buckley will be reporting to Envac UK’s Managing Director, Patrick Haraldsson, who said: “Dave is a well-established figure within the sector and has a solid track record of securing large waste equipmentcontracts. As the UK begins to question the way it collects waste and looks for new approaches to counteract rapid urban development and a growing population, Dave’s appointment couldn’t have come at a better time.

“We look forward to working together, growing the team and continuing to extend Envac’s positionwithin the UK market.”

B&M Waste Services partners with Shelter

Waste management company Bagnall & Morris (B&M) Waste Services has launched an initiative to supply the national homelessness charity Shelter with recycled furniture.

Furniture collected by B&M through its commercial clearance service will be donated to Shelter to be restored, upcycled and sold in the charity’s network of retail outlets to raise funds for the charity.

Mick Ashall, Director of B&M Waste Services said: “B&M’s commercial ethos is to divert as much material from landfill as possible – recycling used furniture is part of this commitment. B&M began working with Shelter in February 2014, when we launched the ‘Refuse not Refuge' campaign – an initiative to raise awareness of the dangers of sleeping in large waste containers.  From our discussions with Shelter we discovered that we could do more to help the charity and we are delighted to now launch the recycled furniture campaign.”

Chris Broom, Area Manager for the North-West division of Shelter, added: "We are delighted that B&M has chosen to partner with Shelter and we would like to thank B&M for the initial batch of products that have been donated. The value of the donation stands at £1,080 and the items will be offered for sale in our Shelter shops, raising important income for the charity."
