WasteAid secures £237K for African waste management programmes

UK charity partners with Veralto to improve conditions for informal waste collections and reduce plastic pollution in The Gambia and South Africa.

WasteAid, The GambiaWasteAid has announced a new partnership with global technology company, Veralto, securing $300,000 (£237,000) to support waste management initiatives in The Gambia and South Africa.

The partnership will primarily focus on expanding resource management operations in the Greater Banjul Area of The Gambia, with additional funding directed toward programmes in South Africa, as part of WasteAid’s First Step Resource Management Programme.

The programme seeks to increase incomes for informal plastic waste collectors by providing new economic opportunities, improve social conditions for those working in the informal waste sector, and reduce plastic pollution by minimising casual waste disposal and dumping in communities.

WasteAid’s approach involves sharing waste management knowledge and skills, training people to become self-employed recycling entrepreneurs, and influencing decision-makers and the donor community to increase investment in waste management.

“Our partnership with Veralto represents more than just financial support, it embodies a shared commitment to create sustainable, positive change for communities on the front line of the waste crisis,” said Ceris Turner-Bailes, CEO of WasteAid.

“Together, we will empower local communities to reclaim value from waste, reduce environmental degradation, and improve public health outcomes.”

A portion of Veralto’s contribution will also support WasteAid’s operations in South Africa, where the operation continues to address waste management challenges in vulnerable communities.

As the partnership advances, WasteAid and Veralto plan to showcase the tangible benefits of integrated waste management solutions and call for global action against the waste crisis. The organisations will also engage Veralto’s staff and stakeholders in collaborative efforts to deliver projects globally.

Surekha Trivedi, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Sustainability at Veralto, added: “Every day, the nearly 17,000 associates at Veralto develop technologies and solutions to ensure billions of people around the world have access to clean water, safe food and trusted essential goods.

“Our partnership with WasteAid – through the good they do in addressing the global waste crisis and promoting circularity – is a natural extension of our commitment to global sustainability.”
