FCC invests £400,000 in Yorkshire reuse shop

In collaboration with Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, waste management company FCC Environment has invested £400,000 in a new reuse shop designed to sell viable items ‘rescued’ from recycling centres.

The shop was opened next to the Humberfield household waste recycling centre (HWRC) near Hessle on Friday (10 July) by East Riding of Yorkshire Council Chairman Peter Turner and the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull, Anita Harrison. The money raised by the reuse shop, which is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm, will be donated to a wide range of charities selected by Councillors Turner and Harrison.

FCC Environment already manages 13 HWRCs for Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire and operates similar schemes in Buckinghamshire, Warwickshire, and Staffordshire in partnership with local charities, but the new East Riding reuse shop will be the first to be run entirely by FCC Environment.

'A great success that will make a significant difference to the environment'

Richard Belfield, Group Development Director at FCC Environment, said: “Our aim is to capture reusable items being taken to the household waste recycling centres which means we can transform goods that would have been disposed of as waste into a valuable resource.

“Opening and operating our own reuse shops ensures that a range of reusable goods, such as push bikes and furniture items, are reused instead of going to landfill.”

Councillor Symon Fraser, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, stated that the authority “very much hope[s] that the reuse shop proves to be a fantastic way for residents to make use of items that are still in good condition which would otherwise end up being thrown away”.

Councillor John Black of Hull City Council added that he hoped the joint initiative with East Riding of Yorkshire Council “proves to be a great success that will make a significant difference to the environment”.
