BWV and Interserve to build East Lothian incinerator
A consortium comprising technology firm Babcock & Wilcox Volund (BWV) and construction company Interserve has been chosen to build Viridor’s East Lothian incinerator.

The £177-million incinerator – set to be built at Viridor’s existing rail-linked Oxwellmains waste treatment hub near Dunbar in East Lothian, Scotland – is expected to burn 300,000 tonnes of residual waste to produce 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity and 10 MW of heat for local use when it comes online in December 2017.
Viridor secured planning consent for the site in December 2010, and approval from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) in 2011.
In November 2014, Viridor received notification from parent company the Pennon Group that it had discharged planning conditions and approved funding for the facility.
It has now been announced that, following a competitive bid process, the BWV Interserve consortium has been chosen to build the energy recovery facility (ERF). The consortium already has a working relationship with Viridor, as it is currently building the company's ERF in Peterborough.
‘We know that they’re up to the job’
Speaking of the appointment, Colin Paterson, Scottish Regional Managing Director at Viridor, commented: “We’ve worked with both BWV and Interserve before so we know that they’re up to the job. Now that they’re on board and all plans have been approved, we can take the next steps. We will give their teams possession of the site in Dunbar in early February 2015.
“This deal will see us jointly support at least 350 skilled and semi-skilled workers throughout the three-year construction phase. After completion in 2017 the new ERF will support 55 full-time jobs, supporting the East Lothian economy by £10 million per year so the sooner we get started, the better for us and the local economy.”
John Veje Olesen, Managing Director of BWV, stated: “The fact that Viridor has selected us to build at Dunbar shows that they have confidence in us.
“The continued advancements we are making to our technology and the benefits this brings to our clients is incredibly important – we deliver quality high performance plants on time and on budget. We already have a good working relationship with the Viridor team and understand their strategic vision so we’re ready to hit the ground running.”
Ian Renhard, Managing Director of Interserve Construction, added: “Interserve is committed to bringing better to life by achieving sustainable outcomes for the communities in which we work. We are pleased that our continued work with our partners Babcock & Wilcox Vølund A/S and Viridor on another Energy Recovery Facility will not only assist UK environmental targets, but also supports the local economy and local employment in Dunbar.”
