Bloomfield Resources invests £600k in UNTHA shredder to accelerate zero-to-landfill goal
Birmingham-based recycling company invests £600,000 in UNTHA XR3000C mobile shredder to target 100 per cent landfill diversion through enhanced material recovery processing
Birmingham-based waste management and recycling company Bloomfield Resources has invested £600,00) in a new UNTHA XR3000C mobile shredder as part of its plan to eliminate landfill waste disposal.
The machine is designed to handle Bloomfield’s permitted 150,000 tonnes of non-hazardous waste per year, with the aim of improving process efficiency and raising material recovery rates. The company currently diverts 92 per cent of its non-hazardous waste from landfill and expects to reach 100 per cent with the support of the new machinery.
The shredder will process a diverse range of material streams, including commercial and industrial (C&I), municipal solid waste (MSW), and bulky waste streams, aiming to both improve throughput and increase resource yield.
It is equipped with in-built tracks, a discharge conveyor, and an overband magnet, which enable it to segregate valuable materials to maximise their onward value. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are recovered for reprocessing and remanufacturing, while residual waste is sent to a local waste-to-energy facility for alternative fuel production.
“We’re continually looking for new ways to innovate and strengthen our role in the circular economy,” said Scott Smith, director at Bloomfield Resources. “Investing in high-performance machinery that can integrate seamlessly into our production line is key to this commitment.
“The XR enables us to process materials more intelligently, recover greater value from our waste streams, and deliver even better results that keep waste out of landfills. Of course, our partners need to be as credible as our technology too – and UNTHA has proven to be a game-changing addition, imparting its globally renowned expertise to help strengthen our outfit.”
Energy efficiency drives operational savings
With a throughput of 22-25 tonnes per hour, the XR3000C produces consistent material outputs of less than 90mm fractions to meet industry and export standards.
The system uses slow-speed, high-torque technology and UNTHA’s Eco Power Drive, which consumes up to 75 per cent less energy than traditional diesel-driven machines. It is designed to offer low wear, maximum uptime, enhanced operator safety, and reduced running costs.
Gary Moore, sales director at UNTHA UK, added: “Conversations surrounding waste are constantly shifting, with more people and businesses acknowledging the wealth of value in our nation’s resources. Bloomfield’s zero-to-landfill commitment is playing a big part in this dialogue, and we’re proud to see an UNTHA shredder at the heart of its operations.
“The XR3000C is a highly reliable, energy-efficient workhorse trusted by hundreds of brands across the globe. It was built for applications exactly like this – where performance, efficiency, and flexibility really matter. Bloomfield knew exactly what it wanted to achieve, and we’ve worked closely to configure a shredding solution that delivers both immediate results and long-term ROI. We look forward to expanding its process together.”
Bloomfield Resources has also confirmed plans to integrate a second UNTHA machine into its operations.
