With Christmas waste volumes rising by over 30 per cent in December, this initiative seeks to help local authorities educate and engage households to make a positive change this winter.

The campaign offers downloadable resources, including customisable social media templates and printable graphics. Alupro has also partnered with Heart Christmas for targeted radio advertising and secured placements in lifestyle magazines like Delicious and Sainsbury’s Magazine throughout December.

Commenting on the campaign, Tom Giddings, executive director of Alupro, said: “We’re keen to support local authorities and work together to boost recycling rates.

“The festive season is an ideal time to spread awareness about recycling as those Christmas treats increase the amount of aluminium packaging in the house.”

By encouraging aluminium recycling through social media and local advertising campaigns, the initiative hopes to curb the waste cooking foil, drink cans, mince pie cases, chocolate wrappers, and metal bottle closures generated over the holiday season.

When recycled, aluminium can be used to manufacture a variety of products - from bicycles and mobile phones to toys and more packaging. However, the busyness of the holidays often lead to recyclable materials being discarded improperly, ending up in landfills or incineration facilities.

Giddings added: “We hope to encourage UK households to take the time to sort and separate. After all, by making small changes, we can all enjoy a more sustainable Christmas.”
