Simply Cups expands paper cup recycling offering
Simply Cups, a UK-based cup recovery and recycling service, has announced that it has gained three new members and added five additional materials to its collection service.
Bunzl Catering Supplies, a supplier of disposables, packaging and hygiene solutions to the UK hospitality industry; Benders Paper Cups, a manufacturer of paper cups and lids; and the British Association for Sustainable Sport (BASIS) have agreed to join the scheme with immediate effect.
Simply Cups, a partnership between Closed Loop Environmental Solutions UK Ltd and Simply Waste Solutions, was launched in August 2014 to recycle some of the 2.5 billion paper cups thrown away every year.
In addition to the collection and recycling of paper cups, the company has announced that it is also extending its service to cover the collection of: beverage cartons; washroom towels; food service PET packaging; and cup lids; and coffee grounds.
Companies already signed up to the Simply Cups scheme include: Costa Coffee; John Lewis Partnership; Baxter Storey; ISS Facilities Services; Huhtamaki; Solo Cup Europe; Connect Vending; Maxabel International; 4 Aces; and James Cropper.
Hospitality sector ‘crying out’ for multi-faceted recovery program
Speaking about the new service, Simply Cups’s Peter Goodwin said: “The feedback that we have received over the course of the year has convinced us that that the hospitality sector is now crying out for a multi-faceted materials recovery program that breaks down dry mixed recycling even further, thereby extracting even greater value, whilst helping businesses move further up the waste hierarchy.”
Bunzl Catering Supplies Director Paul Willcocks added: “Disposable hot cups represent a significant proportion of the waste stream and as founding members of the Simply Cup scheme, we are committed to playing our part in bringing solutions to operators to effectively manage this stream.”
This view was echoed by Benders Paper Cups’ Sales and Marketing Director, Mike Gardner, who said: ‘’Customers have been looking for a way to recycle cups and the Simply Cups scheme delivers a solution for recycling paper cups from their collection post use, to the paper mill for recycling. Customers can be confident their cups are being reprocessed, not incinerated or in landfill.”
According to Russell Seymour, Chair of BASIS and Sustainability Manager at Lord’s Cricket Ground, paper cups represent a significant challenge for sporting venues due to the volume being disposed and confusion regarding whether or not they can be recycled.
He said that he hopes the scheme will ‘increase the level of communication and education’ to members in order to ‘raise recycling rates by properly segregating materials and offering them up for separate collection through the Simply Cups network’.
Russell added: “The momentum in the sporting industry to improve recycling is growing rapidly and we believe that the by joining the Simply Cups scheme we can help accelerate this for the benefit of our members and their own sustainability targets.”
