Paper packaging saves retailer 90 tonnes of plastic

Spanish fashion retailer Alvaro Moreno has announced today (6 April) it has teamed up with packaging and paper producer Mondi to switch its shopping, online delivery and gift bags from plastic to paper.

This is expected to reduce Alvaro Moreno’s plastic consumption by almost 90 tonnes per year.

The retailer has estimated that it previously used more than 3.7 million plastic bags and containers each year and has cited the switch from plastic to paper bags as a ‘commitment to sustainability’.

Alvaro Moreno, founder of the company, commented: “As a business, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint; creating a line of eco-life garments, engaging in plastic clean-up projects in the local area and looking at carrier bags made from natural, renewable and recyclable materials.

“Mondi’s papers helped us to continue this approach while increasing the quality standards required in our packaging.

“As a "company with soul”, we want to meet our consumers’ sustainability goals and since introducing this new packaging range we have already had excellent customer feedback."

Paulus Goess, Sales Director Speciality Kraft Paper at Mondi, added: “We are the number one kraft paper producer globally and our EcoSolutions approach means we work closely with our customers to develop packaging that is sustainable by design, protecting products, meeting customer needs, and minimising impact on the environment.

“Our EcoVantage paper supports Alvaro Moreno’s sustainability aims, thanks to its recycled content and recyclability, and the bags are strong and appealing for customers who are looking for the best shopping experience, both online and in-store.”
