Life Science Centre unveils infinite recycling experience in Newcastle

Award-winning science centre introduces innovative mirrored installation using 1,500 recycled cans to demonstrate the endless potential of aluminium recycling while addressing local sustainability challenges.

Alupro's Infinity Room Education Exhibit at Newcastle UniversityA new immersive recycling exhibit has opened at Life Science Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, using mirrors and recycled cans to educate visitors about aluminium's infinite recyclability potential.

The 'Infinity Room' installation, created by Alupro’s consumer-facing campaign Every Can Counts, features a giant drink can structure containing 25 square metres of mirrors and 1,500 recycled aluminium cans. Visitors stepping inside experience an infinite reflection of suspended cans while listening to educational narration about the environmental benefits of recycling.

Recent research by Every Can Counts found that Newcastle residents consume an average of four canned drinks weekly, with 80 per cent of these being recycled. However, just 53 per cent consistently use recycling bins in public spaces, and only 25 per cent would take packaging home to recycle if no bins were available.

Public recycling infrastructure needs

The study identified key barriers to recycling outside the home, with Newcastle residents citing the need for more recycling bins (59 per cent), clearer bin signage (36 per cent), and increased availability of recyclable packaging (33 per cent).

"The aim of the exhibit is to raise awareness of the infinite recyclability of aluminium in a visual and interactive way," said Chris Latham-Warde, Programme Manager at Every Can Counts. "Every empty can could be recycled and back on a shop shelf as a brand-new can in just 60 days, and each of us can play a vital role in keeping the cycle going to benefit the environment."

The research also revealed that 90 per cent of Newcastle residents believe public parks need better recycling facilities, while 84 per cent support increased recycling education for young people.

Educational impact

The installation marks a significant addition to Life Science Centre's educational offerings as the centre celebrates its 25th anniversary. The exhibit aims to inspire visitors of all ages to understand and engage with recycling processes through an innovative, interactive experience.

The Infinity Room will remain open until October 2024, welcoming visitors Monday through Friday from 10am to 3pm at the Newcastle city centre location.
