7 Steel launches UK recycling operations following acquisition of Celsa Steel

Sev.en Global Investments acquires Celsa Steel UK operations, aiming to produce two million tonnes of steel annually using recycled materials.

Celsa Steel UKSev.en Global Investments has announced the acquisition of two major steel companies, Celsa Nordic and Celsa Steel UK, which have been rebranded as 7 Steel Nordic and 7 Steel UK respectively.

The combined operations will function under the unified 7 Steel brand, with an overall production capacity of two million tonnes of construction steel each year. The steel mills produce bars, sections, mesh and wires, with products used in the construction, shipbuilding, railway, and wind energy generation sectors.

7 Steel has also announced its intentions to bring environmental responsibility and circular economy principles to the centre of its business model. Key to this approach is the use of electric arc furnaces for steel production, which primarily uses scrap steel as their feedstock.

By recycling steel rather than producing it from raw materials, the group significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional steel manufacturing processes.

“We will support growth, development, further innovation, and the green transition. We look forward to promising business strategies and establishing a strong market presence, leveraging our combined strengths to drive innovation and growth. Together, we will build a resilient business ready to face future challenges and unlock new opportunities,” commented Alan Svoboda, CEO of Sev.en Global Investments.

Cardiff operation integrates scrap steel recycling

7 Steel UK, formerly Celsa Steel UK, is headquartered in Cardiff and is currently the largest recycler of scrap steel in the UK. The company maintains a national footprint that includes four strategically located scrap yards and 17 fabricator depots across the UK.

Discussing the circular goals of the company, Cales Rovira, CEO of 7 Steel UK, said: “As 7 Steel UK, we remain deeply committed to serving the UK construction sector with sustainable, high-quality steel. Backed by Sev.en Global Investments, we are poised to accelerate innovation and strengthen our leadership in the circular economy.

“Our people, our purpose, and our product have never been more aligned to the future of the UK economy and the wider UK Steel sector.”

7 Steel Nordic, formerly Celsa Nordic, operates across more than twenty locations in Northern Europe. The group includes 7 Steel Nordic Manufacturing, which produces reinforcing steel in the Nordic region as well as 7 Steel Service companies in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

7 Steel Nordic also recycles steel scrap to produce new steel in an electric arc furnace, using renewable hydropower for energy, and plans to begin producing reinforcing steel based on hydrogen power.

Utku Öner, CEO of 7 Steel Nordic, added: “With our focus on large-scale projects and diverse markets, we aim to leverage our expanded reach and capabilities to provide superior service and low-carbon steel products.”

Sev.en Global Investments will now focus on integrating 7 Steel into its portfolio. The gradual transition and rebranding process is expected to continue until mid-July 2025.

The Czech-based investment group operates on four continents, and has also financed power generation company, InterGen, with four gas-fired power stations in Coryton, Spalding, Rocksavage, and Spalding Energy Expansion.
