Casepak to process Cardiff waste for another year

The City of Cardiff Council has extended its waste processing contract with Casepak by a further year, with an option to extend it to 2015/16.

Casepak has been sorting the council’s co-mingled recyclables since December 2012, and under the new one-year contract (which runs until April 2015), it will sort 7,000 tonnes of Cardiff’s loose co-mingled material and 5,000 tonnes of baled materials at its 150,000 tonne-per-annum materials recovery facility (MRF) in Leicester, where it will be separated and sold on to reprocessors.

Ben Maizey, Contracts Manager at The City of Cardiff Council, said: “We have decided to extend our contract with Casepak as they offer the best value in price and service. Previous experience working with Casepak proved they are able to provide invaluable reporting and support in improving our services.

“They have been open and supportive throughout our time working together and helped us to meet our statutory responsibilities in terms of WasteDataFlow.”

The council is currently in the midst of updating its waste strategy, ahead of new Waste Regulations coming into force in 2015 that require local authorities in England and Wales to separately collect paper, metal, glass and plastic by January 2015 when they are necessary to ‘facilitate or improve recovery’ and are ‘technically, environmentally and economically practicable’ (TEEP).

Cardiff City Council launched a public consultation into the issue last year, and it is expected that the findings will be discussed when the cabinet cycle restarts later this month.
